Seasons is an artist-run contemporary photography gallery started in 2024 in Los Angeles, California. We are currently located in Chinatown at 422 Ord St (2nd Floor) along with our friends The Fulcrum Press, Gene’s Dispensary, and Leroy’s Happy Place.

Framework considers photography as both a form of meditation and of mediation, asking what a representational photograph can claim to hold and communicate. In a moment increasingly shaped by computational picture-making, when photographs no longer reliably function as records of fact and lived experience, this work is drawn not toward certainty but toward a productive friction, the space where the handmade, the observed, and the photographic meet. Some pictures emerge through careful attention to events marked by time and shifting light, while others begin with temporary forms constructed by hand and placed in a pastoral landscape for the camera. These photographs do not attempt to explain the instability inherent in their construction. Instead, they ask what it means to look carefully, to notice fleetingly, and to construct a provisional composition to photograph before it disappears. This slowness is central to the work.
The resulting photographs hover between deliberate documentation and revelatory transformation. Rather than recording an event, the pictures construct an abeyance between landscape and the logic of the photographic frame. Structures lean, float, divide the horizon, or disappear with the movement of the sun. Observed details, including freshly cut logs staked in a blazing fire pit, a fly caught in dried paint on a panel, a tuft of grass bending around another, and the distant outline of a glacial gap between two mountains, tether the photographs. The compositions contain these interventions even as the frames themselves are reorganized by them. The constructions are intentionally unstable, their scale uncertain, and their purpose undetermined, existing alongside moments simply found and attended to. The pictures hold these provisional conditions in suspension, giving temporary coherence to forms that resist being fully revealed or resolved.
Bio
Photographer Joel W. Fisher was born in Newport, Vermont, and lives and works in Portland, Oregon. His work has been exhibited at venues including the Wassaic Project, Fraenkel Gallery, the Houston Center for Photography, and the Fotomuseum Winterthur, with recent exhibitions including Braiding a Current at Ditch Projects in Oregon and El Salón de la Plata sobre Gelatina at LTRL in Mexico City. His first monograph, Landmark, in collaboration with J. T. Leonard, was shortlisted for the Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award at Paris Photo. Fisher has received grants and awards from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Oregon Arts Commission, and the Ford Family Foundation, and has studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig as a Fulbright scholar. His work is held in collections including the RISD Museum, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and the Davison Art Center Collection at Wesleyan University. He holds a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and is currently Associate Professor of Art and Studio Head of Photography at Lewis & Clark College.
