Seasons 08: Margo Ovcharenko With Feathers
Artist
Margo Ovcharenko
Press Release
Seasons is pleased to announce With Feathers, an exhibition of photographs and texts by Margo Ovcharenko. Born in Soviet Russia and based in Kyiv, Ovcharenko has been displaced by the war in Ukraine and now works as an artist in exile. Begun in Kyiv in 2022, With Feathers originated from a desire to photograph the tender, delicate beauty of birds during a moment of foreboding violence. As the war unfolded, the images evolved into an oblique metaphor for captivity, exile and loneliness. The accompanying written texts function as a diary, tracing the escalation of war and the artist’s entrapment within conflict, bureaucracy and statelessness.
The work opens as a reflection on the impossibility of pursuing photographic practice as it existed before. A condition shaped both by the practical limitations of navigating the region and the emotional consequences of losing family on both sides of the border. The caged birds become unexpected companions in flightlessness, isolation, and a yearning to be free. The images attest to the closed nature of the inner world of trauma and the shared plight of needless suffering. With Feathers conveys not only an insightful recognition of artistic expression but an act of deeply felt compassion.
